Leticia Allen, president of Atlanta School of Massage, Traci Daly, Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics Program Director and I recently attended the third annual Green Spa Network Fall Congress at The Westin Riverfront Resort in Avon Colorado. GSN promotes the natural connection between personal well-being, economic sustainability and the health of our planet by helping businesses integrate sustainable best practices into their operations, and by facilitating education, research, and alliances in sustainable management.

Jeffrey Burrell, The Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa Manager, shares inspiring sustainable business practices embraced by the the entire hotel staff. The hotel is silver LEED certified, apparent in almost every detail throughout the hotel.

 Atlanta School of Massage is the first and only massage school represented within the network. As a leader in massage therapy education and esthetician training ASM has an important role in guiding future spa professionals.While at the Congress, Atlanta School of Massage joined the “Guiding Star” sponsorship program which supports the development, enhancement and refinement of the Green Spa Toolkit and SAT (Sustainability Assessment Tool).

The conference featured presentations from over a dozen pioneers and leaders in the sustainability and wellness movements including: mineral cosmetic company founder, Jane Iredale; National sustainability expert, Lewis Perkins; Whole Foods Market Nutritionist and Quality Standards Expert, Jody Villecco; noted editor and author from the beauty and cosmetic space, Rona Berg; founder of Intent.com, Mallika Chopra; award-winning documentary filmmaker, Greg Reitman; LOHASDirector and sustainability industry spokesperson, Ted Ning; and Executive Director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Lisa Archer. Speakers’ topics included Food and Cosmetic Safety and Health; Sustainability Practices in Hospitality; and Transforming Green Spas into Vitality Centers.

GSN members, pioneers of the new health-care and vitality centers, are leading the way through conscious business practices, educating and nurturing clients and community.

ASM has been taking steps towards implementing sustainable business practices starting with the utilization of the SAT and GSN toolkits. In addition to recycling, energy and water conservation, Atlanta School of Massage has enhanced sustainability by purchasing non- toxic paint, carpet made of recycled materials and furnishings made from sustainable resources.
